10-Point Plan
Please note the Operation Ceasefire is no longer in effect.
The US Attorney's Office for DC has the unique responsibility as both local and federal prosecutor. The prosecution of firearms cases and the overall reduction of firearms-related violence is one of its top priorities. After a reexamination of its approaches to firearms-related crimes, the Office adopted an innovative and comprehensive firearms violence reduction strategy that includes the following 10-point plan:
- Expand the Community Prosecution initiative to include all seven police districts within the District of Columbia
- Create and staff a new Gang Prosecution and Intelligence Section
- Increase prosecution of firearms violations in the United States District Court
- Utilize and support ATF's newly created Regional Gun Crime Center
- Modify the current debriefing program to require certain defendants to submit to mandatory debriefings as a condition to receiving a plea offer
- Heighten enforcement of probation and parole conditions for violent chronic offenders
- Implement the Conditions of Release Enforcement Program (CORE)
- Design and implement a comprehensive media campaign to increase public awareness of gun-related crime and violence
- Expand school- and community-based programs aimed at preventing youth participation in drug trafficking and gun violence
- Develop long-term planning with city leaders within the framework of the Department's National Institute of Justice SACSI (Strategic Approaches to Community Safety Initiatives) program
